Importance of Local Control Highlighted at Issues and Ideas Event

The Michigan Municipal League’s COO and Deputy Executive Director Anthony Minghine joined a panel of esteemed speakers at yesterday’s Issues and Ideas event hosted by the Mackinac Center for Public Policy. Minghine, along with State Rep. James Lower and attorney Chance Weldon, discussed a number of topics centered around the question: What is the right balance between local, state and federal control?

Both the League and the SaveMICity movement believe local control is important and necessary to tackle many of the issues currently facing our cities, villages and townships. Although lawmakers have tried to take away or preempt local control, decisions that impact Michigan residents are best made at the local level.

“You’ve got a government closer to the people… I think they’re best suited to deal with those issues on a daily basis,” Minghine said. “Something could be a major issue at the local level that the state would have no interest and no reason to give thought to, and I think that’s, to a large degree, what we’re talking about here today.”
