MML’s Anthony Minghine Discusses the SaveMICity Initiative on WILS
Earlier this week, Michigan Municipal League Deputy Executive and COO Anthony Minghine spoke with WILS’ Dave Akerly about the SaveMICity initiative and the state’s continued disinvestment in its cities, villages and townships.
“We’ve seen a dramatic decline in revenue, and it’s really a challenge to provide services that we know are critical in attracting and retaining people,” Minghine said. “You can’t cut your way to prosperity. You can’t cut your way into being an amazing place that people want to be a part of.”
In a recent SaveMICity blog, Minghine touched on the fact that Michigan’s population is stagnant because we’re not investing in what attracts people – vibrant, desirable places. He shared this fact again on WILS, speaking at length about the need to invest in communities in order to attract talent to the state.
“If you sat down with a business owner and ask them about the types of things that are necessary to attract and retain workers, it’s the same kind of stuff we’re talking about,” Minghine said. “We have tremendous universities; we have natural resources that almost no one can compare with; we have all of these great assets here in Michigan and somehow we’ve played that into a losing hand… I think it’s pretty obvious that we need to make a greater investment.”
Minghine’s full interview can be found on the WILS website.
